IIT Dhanbad

The Indian Institute of Technology (IIT) Dhanbad, formerly the Indian School of Mines (ISM), is situated in Dhanbad, Jharkhand, India. It is the third oldest institute in India to attain IIT status, following IIT Roorkee and IIT (BHU) Varanasi.

Established by the British Indian Government in 1926, IIT Dhanbad originally focused on education in mining and mineral sciences. Modeled after London’s Royal School of Mines, it was inaugurated by Lord Irwin, the then Viceroy of India, on December 9, 1926.
