The Inland Waterways Authority of India (IWAI) was established on 27th October 1986 with the primary objective of developing and regulating inland waterways for shipping and navigation. The IWAI logo symbolizes the Authority’s commitment to enhancing and maintaining the infrastructure of India’s national waterways, which are vital for the efficient and sustainable movement of goods and passengers. Supported by grants from the Ministry of Ports, Shipping and Waterways, IWAI undertakes various projects aimed at improving the inland water transport (IWT) sector, making it a viable alternative to road and rail transport.
With its headquarters in Noida and regional offices in Patna, Kolkata, Guwahati, and Kochi, IWAI has a widespread presence across the country. Additionally, it operates sub-offices in key locations like Allahabad, Varanasi, Farakka, and others to ensure effective implementation of its initiatives. The IWAI logo represents the Authority’s mission to boost inland navigation, contributing to the economic development of the regions connected by national waterways while promoting an eco-friendly mode of transportation.
