National Council for Vocational Education and Training

The National Council for Vocational Education and Training (NCVET) was established by the Ministry of Skill Development and Entrepreneurship (MSDE), Government of India, through Gazette Notification No. SD-17/113/2017-E&PW on December 5, 2018. It became fully operational on August 1, 2020. The NCVET functions as an overarching national regulator, setting standards and formulating comprehensive regulations for the vocational education, training, and skilling ecosystem to improve quality and outcomes.

The NCVET was created by subsuming the functions and responsibilities of the former National Skill Development Agency (NSDA) and the National Council for Vocational Training (NCVT). Its primary mandate is to develop, qualitatively improve, and regulate vocational education entities involved in both long and short-term vocational education and training. The NCVET establishes minimum standards for the operations of these entities, striving to integrate the fragmented regulatory system and infuse quality assurance throughout the vocational education, training, and skilling value chain. This integration aims to produce a higher level of skilled manpower, enhancing employability and accelerating the growth of the Indian economy.
